The name is three things at once. Ergo is my initials, out of order. It is also ἔργον — work, deed, the thing actually made — and the Latin ergo, therefore. Nautica comes from ναῦς, ship: sailors, navigation, getting somewhere without a straight line to follow.

Together they make a compass that needs constant readjustment. That is the mark above the page: the needle sits fourteen degrees off north, and north is marked anyway. You take a reading, you correct, the world moves, you correct again. I have not found a decision that works differently — which is what I intend to write about, from inside the work rather than the far side where everything looks inevitable.
